Styles of Breast Enhancement Methods
The Breast/Inframammary Approach
The most common method for placement of a breast implant is by creating an incision in the inframammary fold. This procedure places the incision in the natural fold or line beneath the breast which is known as the inframammary crease. This approach allows for the most direct pathway and usually requires the very least operative time for placement of the implant.
Areolar/Through the Nipple Approach
A Periareolar incision is where implants are placed by an incision within the pigmented areolar tissue of the nipple. This approach is less commonly employed than the inframammary approach as it does not give the same realiability of implant placement in many cases.
Transaxillary /Under the Arm Approach
The transaxillary approach involves placing incisions in the axilla or armpit, which avoids placement of the scar on the breast. This approach is highly desirable for women who wish to avoid scars on the breasts such as models. This incision site, however, is also not as commonly used as the inframammary approach as it may not give the cleavage that many women desire.
Transumbilical /Through the Belly Button Approach
The transumbilical approach, commonly known as TUBA(transumbilical breast
augmentation), involves placement of the implant through the
umbilicus/belly button. This approach can only be used for saline
implants.
